Preserving And Advancing The Ideals Of
The War For Independence
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of the ideals of the War for Independence. Membership is open to any male descendant of a Patriot Ancestor who actively supported the cause of the American Revolution during the years 1774-1783. Formed in 1889 and chartered by the United States Congress in 1906, SAR has more than 28,000 members living in all of the 50 states and 23 foreign countries.
Throughout its 120-year history, SAR has admitted more than 170,000 members. Among them are 16 Presidents of the United States, including both Bushes, Carter, Ford, Johnson, Eisenhower, Truman and both Roosevelts. SAR has also counted among its members Sir Winston Churchill and King Juan Carlos I of Spain, both of whom trace their ancestry to Revolutionary War patriots.
The Martin family takes great pride in its patriot heritage, including General Joseph Martin — Rod Martin’s fifth great-grandfather — who led the opening of Tennessee and Kentucky to settlement and whose service during the Revolutionary War was instrumental to the British defeats at Kings Mountain, Cowpens, and ultimately, Yorktown; and Captain Thomas Graves — Rod Martin’s eleventh great-grandfather — who was an original investor in the Virginia Company of London (which established Jamestown), personally settled at Jamestown among the third group of settlers in 1608, and later became a founding member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the first freely elected parliament in the New World.
We proudly support the Sons of the American Revolution and the ideals and virtues it upholds.
